‘Follow To Lead’ By Ashley Thekiso @AshOfCeremonies                                                                                       [Co-Founder at SiteMastersSA & Columnist] Dear fellow hustler:   We have all come across that one person in our circles who wants the limelight; that guy who wants to shine in order to be noticed more than everyone else. This my friends is called the power thirty syndrome so please do not mistaken it for leadership. A leader is the guy who behaves in a way that everyone can look up to, a leader is that one person who will sacrifice their lunch for another and finally a leader is the guy who always stands up to take one for the team. Today I would like to talk about leadership: leadership has been described as process of social influence in which a person can enlist the aid and support of others in the accomplishment of a common task. Simply put; a leader is someone who has the ability to guide a group to achieve a mutual goal.   The big issue is not how one leads or who leads a group but how the leader gained the skills to lead; the best way to learn to lead is to follow a great leader. There are many who claim to be leaders because it seems such a prestigious title to have but at the end the day there true leader will clearly show by performance and the ability to stand out from a large group. There is no great successful leader today who was not a follower in their previous years. Great leaders like Napoleon Hill followed in the steps of those great leaders that came before them in order to observe and learn the trait so that when they are leaders they know exactly what comes with being a leader. You can never just wake up one day and decide you are going to lead people when you have never been a follower because you do not have any clue as to how followers think or how they react to ideas and change. Yes there are born leaders with the right instincts and attitudes from birth but to be a leader you need to have experienced how it feels to be led by a great leader otherwise you being a leader is thumb sucked. A true leader actions ideas that have been thoroughly thought through and only ideas that will make some sort of a difference in the world even if it’s to the slightest degree.   A good leader is a veteran [in the sense that they have followed long enough to have learned everything about leadership from their leader] follower who had learned so much that they could not keep their overflowing leadership knowledge to themselves. Why not lead without having followed first is what you would ask and my answer would be; “can a chicken be a chicken before it is an egg?” A chicken can never be a chicken unless it is an egg first. There is a journey of learning that every single leader has to go through in order to be a good leader and every leader’s journey will be different even though most of the lessons learned will be the same. I have mentioned what a leader is and how you need to be a loyal follower of a good leader to actually make a good future leader yourself but the most important thing about being a leader is being able to bare the responsibilities that come with being a leader. Being a leader is not at all about the title or prestige; it’s about responsibility; you as the leader are responsible for people who look up to you, what type of an example you set and what road you lead people to. Let’s go out there and be the best leaders we can be.     It is up to us to oil up the economic engine of South Africa, let’s pay our dues in this game so that when we finally make it; it is worth it. We have been given this freedom by those who came before us; the least we can do is prove that we deserve it. Existence is given; Life is a choice – Ashley Thekiso
