By Matshidiso Makhalanyane High school learners were looking forward to a day that will change their life forever when it comes to choosing careers. They were looking forward to spending their day their peer at Wits University until the University cancelled the annual Focus Day known as open day for 2016. The University decided to instead post their admission information on their website. “We need to move with the times and reach prospective students where they are searching for information-online or via their electronic devices,” said the head of marketing, Ferna Clarkson. Clarkson said the University was improving online experience for the web and social media to reach the audience. 12 000 learners from Gauteng and other provinces last year attended the open Day which helps learners in choosing their career paths. They also get an opportunity to see a potential institution. In most cases, learners who attend an open day do no end up registering because they do not qualify to come to Wits. Main reason for that would be because they did not take maths in matric and most programmes require maths. “From feedback within faculties many of the students who come to Wits do not come as a result of having attended a focus day,” said Clarkson.
