We all know that person. They start every conversation with, “So, I was listening to this podcast” or “I heard something really interesting in a podcast I was listening to”. It seems that once someone is addicted to listening to podcasts, they just can’t seem to get enough. And why would they? A world of information and entertainment is waiting to be downloaded onto your phone or computer. You can enjoy these digital radio shows while driving, walking, exercising and relaxing. And the best part about listening to podcasts? It’s so easy, you don’t even need computer courses to figure out how to download them. These are the seven podcasts you should be listening to right now. Serial The one that started it all. The one that got everyone addicted. It’s hard to believe but podcasts have been around for more than 10 years. Season one of Serial is credited with being the driving force of the recent surge in popularity of podcast listening. It’s the story of high school student Hae Min Lee who disappeared in 1999. Six weeks later her boyfriend, Adnan Syed, was arrested for her murder and despite his plea of innocence was convicted for the crime. It was reported earlier this year that the show had been downloaded more than 80 million times. The Mortified Podcast Because nothing helps you through a rough spot like hearing about other young people’s worst moments. Mortified is a storytelling series where adults face a live audience to share their most embarrassing moments. They share diaries, letters and lyrics they wrote as young people. Their horrifying tales of first love, inappropriate crushes, arguments with parents and awkward teen struggles will have you laughing and cringing along with them. Adulting A podcast about the kinds of things we should probably know more about. Adulting looks at what it takes to become an adult, from sex and money to careers and the meaning of life. This podcast is a series of conversations which will leave you feeling a better about how little we actually know. Millennial Megan Tan is a young college graduate who can’t find a job, isn’t exactly sure what to do with her life and doesn't know how to make the big decisions of her twenties. Sound familiar? Her story will inspire you as you muddle through your own confusing life. TED Radio Hour Every time you watch a TED talk you feel motivated and just a little better about yourself, right? That’s what this show is all about. It’s a collection of interesting ideas and inventions which inspire you to think about things a little differently. It’s based on TED talks from some of the smartest people around the world which have been collated into a common theme like the source of happiness, crowd-sourcing innovation, power shifts and inexplicable connections. Women Of The Hour Lena Dunham, writer and creator of TV show Girls, discusses friendship, love and sex, work, life and death, and body insecurities. The episodes offer an insight into lives and conversations you possibly otherwise wouldn’t come across. And, as a bonus, if you’re feeling anxious or having trouble sleeping, do yourself a favour and listen to the Daily Meditation Podcast. Meditation teacher Mary Meckley’s soothing voice will soon have you feeling relaxed and drifting off to sleep. Don’t delay, get yourself to a Wi-Fi hotspot and download some podcasts now.
