An update on 7 Wits University students who died in Limpopo accident
By Matshidiso Makhalanyane On Sunday night, seven students died while six others were injured when their minibus taxi collided with a trailer near Mokopane, Limpopo emergency medical services (EMS) said. It was reported that the students were on their way back to Johannesburg from Zion Christian Church (ZCC) prayer meeting they attended in Moletjie near Polokwane, said spokesperson Kagisho Mootane. Amongst those who met the families and friends of the students who died were several Wits delegations including members of the Wits Students` Representative Council, Dean of student Affairs Dr Puleng LenkaBula and Vice-Chancellor Professor Adam Habib. Delegation worked together with the police in identifying the bodies of the students so that the police would inform their next of kin. The students were in different faculties and also were in different level of study. They were also from different provinces. Six survivors were visited by the delegation and MEC of Health at the various hospitals in Mokopane. Wits has arranged with the provincial department of health to have other students transferred to Gauteng-based hospitals if the necessary treatment is not available in Mokopane. Investigations are still underway though the reports show that then minibus hit the stationary trailer that was on the road and caused minibus to burst into flames.
