By Makhalayane Matshidiso Prof. Jonathan Jansen from the University of the Free State will be stepping down on 31 August 2016 as both Vice-Chancellor and Rector. He was invited as a fellow at the Centre for Advanced Studies in the Behavioral Science at Stanford University in the USA in September 2016. The fellowship was awarded to him earlier this year. Prof. Jansen was appointed as Vice-Chancellor and Rector on 1 July 2009 and was extended for another five years by the Council on 1 July 2014. Prof. Jonathan Jansen`s departure is a great loss for the University but his decision of stepping down is accepted as he will be pursuing his academic careers and other opportunities. The University is very grateful for the leadership role that Prof. Jansen provided during the time he served at the UFS. He has been there for the University with its ups and down. He played a vital role in developing the University. Through his leadership, the UFS made great strides in fulfilling its social responsibilities to serve the community. He was the right leader, at the right time. This will be a very great loss to the UFS. On behalf of the Council and the entire university community, I thank him for his contribution as a capable, energetic and dedicated leader and wish him all the best for his future. The Council will soon start the process to appoint a successor through a national and international search.
