We all just want to have a bit of fun, especially on the weekend, after a tough week of classes, lectures and tests. But it can be tricky when money is tight. Often, weekend nights involve going out to eat and drink, dancing with friends and going to the hottest new clubs. These nights out soon become too expensive to do too often. That's why it’s become increasingly popular to choose not to spend money for at least one day a week or on the weekend. Author Ramit Sethi of I Will Teach You To Be Rich says: “If you force yourself to do this only one day per week, you’ll look back the next week and realise it wasn’t so bad. You can do the same thing - but the key is adding to your calendar so you make it a consistent system, not an ad hoc whim.” If you’re looking for some options for having fun on a budget this weekend, this is for you. Get outside Spending time outside can be fun, cost nothing and improve your mood. If you’re in Cape Town, you can head to the beach or mountain, Joburg locals can take a walk in one of the many parks or markets, and Pretoria’s students in need of a bit of luck can head to one of the Jacaranda-lined streets. Legend has it that if you’re walking underneath one of these purple plants and one of the blossoms falls onto your head, you’re sure to pass. Exercise is one of the best things you can do for yourself. Games Get your friends together and host a games night. Gather up all the old favourites – playing cards for rummy, 30 Seconds, Monopoly and Scrabble are always winners. If you don't have any board games, try borrowing some from your local library or a friend. Movies Host a weekend movie marathon. Choose a movie series to watch and find all of the DVDs from friends, family and, again, the library. A series of movies like The Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter will take hours to watch. Gather together your friends, pile up on your lounge suites with all of your warm blankets and make some delicious snacks. It'll be a weekend chock-full of fun and friends. Dance party If your usual favourite weekend activity is hitting the dance floor or karaoke clubs, throw your own dance party in your digs’ lounge. All you’ll need is some music and you’re ready to go, without you having to spend a cent. It’s not just something Meredith and Christina did on Grey’s Anatomy, it’s a great way to relieve stress, have a little bit of fun and have a workout. Potluck dinner One of the easiest and best ways to celebrate the weekend without breaking the bank. Invite your friends round for dinner and ask them all to bring part of the meal. One person brings the starter, another the main course, someone else the dessert and another person the drinks. That way everyone contributes to the meal and you don’t have to do all the work.
