The first week of registration kicked off at the North West University Mafikeng campus earlier today( 16 January) for first years,  while a score of returning students are left seeking answers after getting  no response for their NSFAS application. It is said that access to the Mafikeng campus is limited to certain students, political party leaders from SASCO, DASO AND EFFSC are not  allowed to enter campus. When security personnel was asked  to why are political party leaders not allowed to access campus, their response was “ we were instructed not to let them in”. A student leader who does not want to be named says that what is happening at the campus is  oppression and madness, why deny students access to campus when they want to query about their applications and outstanding balances, the same CSRC that was elected by students has turned it’s back on students and are siding with management and left students to stress. Meanwhile  the national head office of the NSFAS are saying that they are experiencing high number of applications and they are trying by all means to respond to students as quickly as possible, their main priority is to respond to the first group of students that applied last year on the first window period, students that applied this year on the second window period which opened on the 9th of January 2017 will get responses  starting from the 1st of February. A lot of students are left worried and uncertain on whether will they continue with their studies or not, as the CSRC is quite on the current status quo of the students issues. For the past two years the NWU Mafikeng campus has been haunted by students protest which has left student leaders suspended and students without a voice, will the campus yet again experience another student protest?   Article by: Tebogo Lesoro
