So, you’ve finally moved into your own student apartment or house. You have your own space and you think it’s time you show it off. And what better way to show off your new digs than with a dinner party? It’s the perfect way to introduce your friends to your home in a sophisticated and grown-up way.
However, before you start inviting people over, you will need to make sure that you have the right equipment. You’re going to need more than just a table and a few chairs. So, to help you out, here is the kitchenware you should make sure you have for your first dinner party.
Pots and pansTo start with, you’re going to need pots and pans. We suggest you choose a cast iron pot or a stainless steel pot. Or both if you want to cook more than one dish at a time. Look for pots for sale on one of the many online stores in South Africa. This way you can find cookware sets that are affordable and can be delivered to your new home.
Of course, you will also need a frying pan with a nonstick coating. This is to ensure that your food doesn't stick to the pan and that the pan will last longer. Just make sure that you don’t use a metal utensil, such as a steel spatula, as this will ruin the coating.
And you can get both of these as an iron or steel cookware set. You don’t have to order a 10-piece cookware set or fancy designs, you simply need a pot with a glass lid and a frying pan.
You’re an adult now with your own home, this means that the days of mismatched cutlery are over.
You can no longer use old pieces of cutlery “borrowed” from the campus dining hall or old items given to you by your parents. You need to purchase cutlery along with your iron or stainless steel cookware. Would Rachael Ray or other well-known chefs have cutlery of all shapes and sizes? No, we think not.
Try browsing stores online for good deals. You don’t need the fanciest cutlery, after all, you are still a student. But if you want your friends to be wowed by your meal, you should offer them stylish, metal and matching cutlery to eat with. This brings us nicely to the next point.
Plates, side plates and bowls
You may be thinking that this is an obvious point. But many people think they can get away with just having a few plates. And then they realise at the last minute that they don’t have enough of these. You need to make sure that you match the number of plates to the number of guests you have invited.
And then you need side plates for bread or starters and bowls for dessert. You may not think having side plates is all that necessary, but it’s more than just a nice touch. There isn’t always enough space on the main plate to keep all the food. And if you’re serving starters, you don’t want to have to wash and dry all the plates between servings.
In addition to this, you’ll also need the following
An oven you’ve tested out
Whether you’re using the inside of your oven or an induction cooktop, you need to make sure that it works properly. Ensure that your pots or pans are oven safe if you want to stick something under the grill before you serve it. In addition to this, ovens vary in temperature and the time it takes for them to heat up also often differs. This is why you should cook for yourself a few times before you have guests over for a meal. You don’t want to serve dried out chicken or a burned stew.
And, finally, a delicious recipe
This is important, you need to know what you’re going to be cooking. You shouldn’t simply leave it until the last minute on the day to decide. You will need to ensure that you have all the ingredients you need, especially as your local grocery store may not have what you need. It’s also a good idea to stick to what you know. And that means that you shouldn’t try a new recipe for a dinner party. You can either cook a dish you know well or practise a few days before the event.
When you have all these at the ready, you’ll be fully prepared to show off your new place to your friends. Good luck and remember to have fun!
